Environmental activists have been very active in state legislatures across the country gaining the favor of lawmakers to introduce bills that place responsibility of recycling and disposal of products squarely on the shoulders of manufacturers. CHPA has monitored so-called extended producer responsibility (EPR) bills for a number of years now; they have ranged from EPR for pharmaceuticals (drug take-back), and even EPR for product packaging. Now, policymakers are extending EPR to batteries used in products, including those batteries in consumer medical devices.
