(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – The Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA) released the following statement today in response to U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary announcing plans to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes from the national food supply and replace them with natural ingredients:
“FDA-approved colors and dyes are among the most rigorously studied and regulated ingredients in the food and healthcare supply. These certified additives have undergone decades of scientific evaluation under the gold standard of safety set by FDA. As changes are considered, CHPA supports a transparent, evidence-based process that prioritizes public health and maintains consumer trust,” said CHPA President and CEO Scott Melville. “CHPA will carefully review the agencies’ plan announced today, as it is essential that changes of this significance be grounded in science and adhere to appropriate administrative procedures. A uniform, evidence-driven approach not only safeguards public health, but also preserves the safety and reliability of our nation’s food supply, which also includes dietary supplements.
“As a growing patchwork of state-by-state laws is introducing confusion, inefficiency, and uneven enforcement into our nation’s food and supplement supply, CHPA pledges to work with the Administration to assess federal regulatory standards that are grounded in sound science and provide consumers with the assurances of safety and quality they expect and deserve.”
