CHPA Statement on Recent Observational Study Related to Inflammation, Analgesics, and Chronic Pain

“Millions of Americans rely on safe and effective over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers, including a number of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The recent study published in the journal Science Translational Medicine introduces a novel hypothesis for future researchers to consider, but this observational study is the first look – not a definitive answer – at the hypothetical question of whether analgesics, through inflammation suppression, modify the risk for developing chronic pain. The authors are not calling for changes to guidelines and they conclude that more research is needed. Consumers can continue to have confidence in the safety and efficacy of OTC NSAID medicines when used as directed by drug labels and healthcare providers.

“The authors also noted several limitations in their research including the lack of a control group in one arm of the study, the small sample size, and no access to information on NSAID dosing among the study population. A randomized controlled clinical trial would be necessary to verify the authors’ hypothesis.

“OTC pain relievers including NSAIDs are indicated for the temporary relief of minor aches and pains and should not be taken longer than 10 days unless directed by a doctor. Consumers should always read and follow the Drug Facts Label, and take the lowest effective dose to treat their symptoms. For more information on OTC pain relievers, visit KnowYourOTCs.org."
