“The Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA) is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Orrin Hatch, former seven-term U.S. Senator from Utah, a principled legislator dedicated to his state and his nation and who, among many other accomplishments, had a tremendous impact on public health and self-care during his four decades in the Senate. We at CHPA express our sincerest condolences to the Senator’s family for their loss.
“Senator Hatch provided critical bipartisan leadership that led to the enactment of historic legislation that helped shaped the nonprescription drug and dietary supplement industries. His innumerable legislative accomplishments include enactment of the 1984 Hatch-Waxman Act, which created the pathway for generic drug applications with incentives for pioneer drug applications in place today, as well as the 1994 Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), which established the legal framework for dietary supplements. DSHEA led to a massive growth in that category over the next nearly three decades. Other public health measures championed by Senator Hatch include the Children’s Health Insurance Program, and Americans with Disabilities Act.
“These measures, and others, have improved safety, quality, and access to healthcare for American consumers by strengthening FDA oversight, creating standards for adverse event reporting, labeling, product uniformity, good manufacturing practices, and much more. To recognize his many accomplishments and commitment to consumer healthcare, CHPA awarded Senator Hatch its Ivan D. Combe Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006.”
