CHPA Statement Regarding Study Regarding PPIs and COVID-19

“The observational Internet survey results pre-published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology reporting an association between use of proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) medicines and self-reported positive tests for COVID-19 among people taking PPIs do not prove cause-and-effect. Self-reported surveys lack rigor due to inherent limitations including recall bias, protopathic bias, selection bias, and other confounding factors. The study authors also fail to account for conflicting data demonstrating that respondents taking PPIs for a longer duration (more than 6 months) show a lower risk for positive COVID test results compared to those taking PPIs for 6 months or less.

“Millions of Americans deal with frequent heartburn which interferes with daily life and should not be ignored. When deciding how to self-treat frequent heartburn, OTC PPIs are an appropriate option—and the only OTC specifically indicated to treat frequent heartburn. OTC PPIs are indicated and labeled only for once-daily use, for a maximum of 14 days every four months. Controlled clinical trials and long-term safety monitoring data have indicated that OTC PPIs are safe and provide health benefits when taken as directed.

“OTC medicines are regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and each OTC medicine has a clear Drug Facts label to help consumers understand what it is used for, to ensure proper dosing and duration of use, and to avoid drug interactions. Any severe or persistent symptoms should be immediately reported to a healthcare provider.”
