(WASHINGTON, D.C.) — The Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA) President and CEO Scott Melville today released the following statement in response to the Department of Justice and its federal partners’ announcement of their pursuit of civil and criminal cases against more than 100 makers and marketers of illegal products sold as dietary supplements.

"CHPA applauds the Department of Justice, Federal Trade Commission, Food and Drug Administration, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Department of Defense, and the Anti-Doping Agency for their sweep of actions announced today targeting companies that are marketing and selling illegal products masquerading as dietary supplements. We encourage federal authorities to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law any company that sells products that are tainted or adulterated. These illegal products are a major threat to public health and hurt the credibility of the legitimate dietary supplements industry.

“CHPA has long supported efforts of law enforcement and regulators to crack down on rogue manufacturers who threaten public health and defraud consumers with bogus products masquerading as lawful dietary supplements. Dietary supplements are a major part of people’s health regimens; more than two-thirds of Americans take vitamins and other supplements. CHPA is proud of the supplements that our members manufacture and wants to ensure that consumers have continued confidence in these trusted brands. Supplement manufacturers are regulated under federal law by the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) and are required to comply with good manufacturing practices and report adverse events as they occur.”

The Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), founded in 1881, is the national trade association representing the leading manufacturers and marketers of consumer healthcare products, including over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, dietary supplements, and consumer medical devices. CHPA is committed to empowering self-care by ensuring that Americans have access to products they can count on to be reliable, affordable, and convenient, while also delivering new and better ways to get and stay healthy.
