As noted in last week’s Weekly Voice, late last week Representatives John Curtis (R-Utah) and Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.) introduced H.R. 5214, legislation to allow consumers to use HSA and FSA accounts to purchase dietary supplements. This past March, CHPA hosted official meetings with both members of Congress separately to help build relationships and discuss our priorities. This legislation is a direct result of those conversations. Both representatives are leaders in the 60-Member Problem Solvers Caucus, made up of centrist members of Congress, so their leadership on this issue is important.

The environmental committee of the organization introduced a policy resolution (resolution #57) supporting plastic pollution reduction as a response to a growing inability by municipalities to handle waste management systems.

A stakeholder advisory committee charged with making recommendations to the Washington legislature regarding the establishment of the state’s new extended producer responsibility for packaging law (E2SSB 5022) held their first meeting on Tuesday. The bill, which initially applied only to beverage containers, was expanded during the legislative session to include more product categories, but CHPA worked to secure an exemption for FDA approved over-the-counter medications, dietary supplements, and medical devices.
