(WASHINGTON, D.C.) — The Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA) today responded to an announcement from the Department of Commerce this week regarding the initiation of a Section 232 investigation into the national security implications of pharmaceutical imports, including finished drug products, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), and other critical materials:

“CHPA supports the Administration’s efforts to strengthen national security and expand domestic manufacturing of OTC medicines and other consumer healthcare products,” said CHPA President and CEO Scott Melville. “However, our industry currently relies on a global supply chain for necessary ingredients and components, including starting materials, active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), and packaging materials and components. Any effort to reshore this well-established manufacturing infrastructure must be done in a way that doesn’t disrupt product supply or unnecessarily raise costs to American consumers.”

“CHPA will therefore be participating in the Department of Commerce’s recently-announced Section 232 investigation into the national security effects of imports of pharmaceuticals, pharmaceutical ingredients, and their derivatives, and we will be submitting formal comments. Along with our member companies, CHPA is committed to engaging with the Administration to identify smart, targeted policies that support domestic manufacturing capacity without negatively impacting public health.”

The Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), founded in 1881, is the national trade association representing the leading manufacturers and marketers of consumer healthcare products, including over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, dietary supplements, and OTC medical devices. CHPA is committed to empowering self-care by ensuring that Americans have access to products they can count on to be reliable, affordable, and convenient, while also delivering new and better ways to get and stay healthy.
